Word of the Week: Adoration

Week of January 10 – January 16, 2009

Definition:  Adoration means to give homage or worship to someone or something.  Homage is to show public respect.

Quotable Quotes:

“To gather with God's people in united adoration of the Father is as necessary to the Christian life as prayer.”        ~Martin Luther

“I just want the money and the fame and the adoration, and I don't want any of the other stuff.” ~Matthew Broderick

I hope you have lost your good looks, for while they last any fool can adore you, and the adoration of fools is bad for the soul.  No, give me a ruined complexion and a lost figure and sixteen chins on a farmyard of Crow's feet and an obvious wig.  Then you shall see me coming out strong.~George Bernard Shaw

Let’s Get to the Point:

1.  In ancient times only divine beings received adoration.

2.  Adoration is used to compliment someone or used as good manners to that someone

3.  Adoration in your life is a good trait, because it helps make you kind if you mean it.

Put Words into Actions:

Take a moment during a day to reflect upon an event where you showed adoration.  Was it to a friend or family member for something they did for you, or were you just looking at someone or something and you recognized just how ‘lucky’ you maybe?

Think About It:

1.      How often do you show adoration?

2.      What are some ways you can show adoration to people around you?

3.      Is it easy to show adoration on an everyday basis?

Reflection

When someone says the word “adoration,” what do you think of?  Of course, you may think of the dictionary definition: “Adoration is fervent and devoted love,” but I think of something more specific.  To me, adoration is the unconditional love demonstrated by my family.  My family has always been there for me.  If it were not for the love and support of your family, would not your life be chaotic (or should I say more chaotic than it already is)?  The adoration of my family provides me a solid base to build my own life.  They have taught me how to love and care for others.  This is a very important part of living your life to your full potential.  Next year I will be setting out into the real world and it is going to be a frightful task, but I know that my family will always support me in whatever I choose to do.  I know that if I have a problem, my family will listen to me, and in turn, support my decisions.  Their assistance in my decision-making will help me overcome any complications that come along with my decision.

You can adore your siblings, or your parents, and they too can have that same relationship with you.  Adoration can mean different things to different people.  A wife can adore her husband (or vice-versa).  A child can adore a gift given to them by a grandparent.  A young athlete can adore a professional ballplayer.  An aspiring guitar player can adore the work of current musician.  That adoration towards a gift or talent by these people is truly defined as “the profound love and admiration."  We should all strive to show adoration in our daily lives.  It could be as easy as telling a sibling what a nice job they did coloring something that you have no idea what it is, to telling someone that care and appreciate them.

Everyone should examine the things their family does for them and what they do for their family.  It could be something as small as telling your Mom or Dad “I Love You” as you leave for school in the morning. Claudia Christian says, “You can’t look in the face of adoration and be cruel.”  How true that is.  When you look at something you adore, it is hard to be anything but glad.  Adoration is perhaps the most intense feeling expressed by people, and it should not be overlooked in everyday life.
