05/25/2012
General Interest

Georgia Military College honored those brave individuals who have paid the ultimate price in service to our Country with a special ceremony on Friday, May 18 at 2:30 p.m. on Grant Parade.  The guest speaker was The Honorable Jack Hill, Georgia State Senator, District 4.

The Distinguished Graduating Student Award was presented to the following:  Scottie Smith (Atlanta-Fairburn), Lisa A. Shead (Augusta-Martinez), Juan Gardia (Columbus), Corey Smith (Milledgeville), Nakita Henry (Valdosta) and Richard Stewart (Warner Robins).  This award recognizes a graduating student from each campus who is the best representative of the college and embodies all the qualities a graduate of Georgia Military College should possess.

Traci Reaves was named the 2011-2012 GMC Employee of the Year for contributing most to the accomplishment of the GMC mission during the school year.

MG Peter J. Boylan recognized four faculty and staff members for their service to GMC’s students:

Coach Chris Barfield, GMC Prep School faculty, August 1995 to June 2012.

Coach Garry Couch, GMC Prep School faculty, September 1983 to June 2012.

Coach Johnny Griffin, GMC Prep School faculty, August 1983 to June 1990 and August 2002 to June 2012.

Colonel Bruce Wright, Director of the Augusta Campus, April 1993 to June 2012.

Each year, the Junior College and Prep School Companies engage in a friendly rivalry amongst themselves as they vie for the coveted designation of Saber Award Company.   The criteria used to judge this competition includes the Inspections, Discipline, Character, Parades, Intramurals-School Spirit, and the Academic Record of each of the members of the company.  This year, Bravo Company of the 1st Battalion, Band Company of the 2d Battalion, and Echo Company of the 3d Battalion earned the Saber Company award.  Cadet Captain Greg Sigmon accepted the honor for Company B of the 1st Battalion.  Cadet Captain Leanna Harbor accepted the honor for the Company B of the 2nd Battalion.  Cadet Captain Scott Niblett accepted the honor for Company E of 3d Battalion.

Rear Admiral Stosz, Superintendent of the Coach Guard Academy tendered an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut for the following cadets:   Madison Ahlers, Blake Bonifas, Benjamin Chapman, Thomas Condon, Stephanie Hawk, Brett Losey, Robert McKenna, Mitchell Motlagh, Troy Nunes, Andrew Scheffey, Allison Schneller, and

Samuel Williams.

Cadet First Sergeant Heather Bennett was promoted to Cadet Colonel and appointed by the President of Georgia Military College to be the Regimental Commander of the 134th Corps of Cadets.  In a time honored tradition, the Regimental Colors was passed from the outgoing Commander to the incoming Commander.

The outgoing Regimental Commander, Cadet Colonel Nicholas Trouy, was presented a saber for his leadership during this school year.
