Georgia Military Prep School has a proud history of winning baseball. Some of the coaches and teams are listed below: Any help with the period prior to 1969 would be helpful.

Freddy Layton, from Louisville, was the coach from 1969-72. Not sure about championships, but I know those teams were good. Players like Mike Rinka, Chris Wood, were mainstays for those teams.

Between 1973,74,75,76 they were region championships under Bobby Edder, Jimmy Hardie, and Tommy Puckett, in that order. They were State runner up to Trion in 1973, Elite 8, 1974, State Runner 1975, and State Champions in 1976, with Tommy Puckett as the coach. Walter Prestwood, Gary Hardie, Rick Ploof, Smiley Giles, Garry Couch, and Ray Brandt were just a few of the mainstays during that time.

Coach Gene Dews was the coach from 1977-80. He always had his teams prepared and they did well. They were region runner up to Mt.Desales in those years with players like Pete Mchan, Walter Green, Bob Simmons, Loy Smith, and Scott Seagraves. John Hunter, from down around Avon Park, and Frostproof Fla. was the coach from 1981-1984. He had a few region runners up teams, with players like Tom Frazier, Ben Anderson, Jackie Hughes, and Darren Spivey. In 1983 Garry Couch became the assistant coach to John Hunter and then took over the program as the head coach the next year. He has been the head coach ever since. In his years they have been to the playoffs, in some fashion, twenty times. He has had several region championships and region runner’s up. He has only had five years where his teams did not finish above .500. Players like Jay Mobley, Billy Chambers, Johnny Pressas, Matt Vinson, and Ashley Andrews were a few of the players that made this possible. The bulldog’s deepest run in the playoffs was in 2004 when Ross Couch, Will Prestwood, Cliff McGhee, Reggie Mosley and Trey Jackson helped the team make it to the Elite 8. This was the deepest any team had been since 1976
