What's There To Do Around GMC?

Around GMC Shopping: Downtown Milledgeville provides a variety of specialty shops. The downtown shopping is within walking distance from Georgia Military College. On the northside of town are such businesses as Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Big Lots. Other businesses offer clothing, household items, hardware and garden supplies.

Hatcher Square Mall offers such stores as J.C. Penneys, Belks and Goodies. Milledgeville offers several bookstores, video rentals and an Office Max. A state-of-the-art Lowes recently opened. Milledgeville offers several chain grocery stores and is home to many drug stores.

Eating: Those wanting to eat out in Milledgeville have many different choices and there are many different cuisines from which to choose. There are restaurants and fast-food establishments in every direction.

Entertainment: Carmike Cinemas offers a six-screen facility located near Hatcher Square Mall. Movie rental stores can be found on North Columbia Street and on the south side of town.

Cultural:

Baldwin County has many cultural activities that include exhibits and classes, lectures and live performances. Georgia College and State University offer many cultural events. The Allied Arts give people the opportunity to enjoy all facets of the arts.

Milledgeville has three libraries to serve visitors and citizens. The Mary Vinson Library is on Jefferson Street. The Ina Dillard Russell Library is located on the campus of Georgia College and State University. The Sibley Cone Library is located on the campus of Georgia Military College.

Places to Visit in Baldwin County:

Little Fishing Creek Golf Course is an 18-hole county maintained golf course.

Golf Country is located on Highway 49 and offers a lighted driving range.

Little River Park is located off Highway 441 North and offers swimming, camping and fishing.

Lake Sinclair is a 15,000 acre lake located in Baldwin County. The lake has over 417 miles of shoreline and fed by the Oconee River. Georgia Military College maintains a lake lot on Lake Sinclair. The lake lot is the site of many reunions and family gatherings during the year.

Walter B. Williams, Jr. Park encompasses 400 acres and provides a swimming pool, playground, tennis course, baseball fields and a fishing pond. Other amenities include picnic areas, a nature trail, a walking track and a community center.

The Lockerly Arboretum is filled with growing wonders from Mother Nature. It is equipped with walking trails and picnic areas for the visitors to the beautiful gardens.

Historical:

Around GMC Milledgeville was designed as a Capital city and it was chartered in 1803. Milledgeville was selected the capital because of the central location.

The historical landmarks of Baldwin County include the Old Governor's Mansion and the Old State Capitol which is on the grounds of Georgia Military College. The Old Governor's Mansion was constructed in 1838 and was home to Georgia governors through 1868. Construction of the Old Capitol started in 1804. The building is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic-style architecture in the country today.

The Old State Capitol Building has recently completed a total renovation. Perhaps the oldest public building in the Unites States built in Gothic-style, it served as the seat of government for Georgia from 1803-1868. The grounds of Georgia Military College feature restored gates at the north and south entrances. The Capitol Building features a restored Legislative Chamber and Rotunda. A museum has been opened in the ground floor of the building. Visitors are welcome.

Milledgeville offers a Ghost walk through the historic district. Reservations can be made through the Visitors and Information Bureau. Included in the walk are Georgia College and State University, Georgia Military College and the Historic district. The two mile walk takes about 1 1/2 hours.
