Required Character Development Course
Junior college students attending Georgia Military College are required to successfully complete GMC 154 (Character Above All)
as a prerequisite for graduation. The course introduces GMC students to the values and character development expectations of the
college.
Students taking the course use the first half of the course to further develop critical thinking and ethical
decision making skills and examine the foundations of ethical reasoning through familiarization with selected
traditions of ethical thought. Instruction is given on a small set of moral theories including Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics,
Immanuel Kant’s Ethics of Duty, and John Stuart Mill’s Theory of Utilitarianism.
During the second half of the course, using skills and knowledge developed earlier, students’ study and debate contemporary
ethical issues.
Persons interested in developing a program of self-study on the subject of ethics may find Lawrence M. Hinman’s “Ethics Update” a
helpful guide for study and reflection.
